What are the VPN protocols?
The VPN protocols are used by VPN-providers to ensure an anonymous and secured VPN connection: PPTP, L2TP and OpenVPN.
These protocols serve two goals: transmit data in a secured way. That’s why they can use other protocols having a precise objective. OpenVPN is overall a free software. It uses TLS/SSL security protocol and includes also two steps: authentication and data encryption.
What about the OpenVPN?
OpenVPN operates a double authentication: from your computer to the VPN server and from the server to your computer. This process implies a reinforced security.
As soon as the authentication is complete the OpenVPN uses symmetric encryption for the data encryption. The used encryption keys have variable lengths: 128bit, 256bit or 448bit.
The longer is the key, the more secure connection it provides.
Avantages
